11.10.2024 In their 2023 – 2026 coalition agreement “The Best for Berlin”, the CDU and SPD have agreed to further advance protection against passive smoking in the Non-Smoker Protection Act (NRSG) and to reduce control deficits.
The Senate Department for Science, Health and Care has been working on the amendment to the law for some time. We would like to bring new momentum to the proposed legislation.
Together with other non-smoker protection organisations, we are addressing a joint position paper to the governing mayor, the health senator and the parliamentary leaders of the CDU, SPD, Greens and the Left Party.
In it, we demand that non-smoker protection in Berlin must at least fulfil the standards to which Germany has committed itself under international law in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). According to this, smoking bans must be guaranteed for all enclosed public spaces and, where appropriate, for other outdoor public places. Smoking rooms must not be authorised as their design does not offer effective protection.
